A Riddle

August 3, 2010

We sat at the dinner table.  Shane asked, “Want to hear a riddle?”

“Sure,” I said.  While he gathered his thoughts, mine wandered back to the riddles I told when I was six.   “What’s black and white and red all over?”

I wondered if kids still tell that one.  Shane told his riddle.

“What’s black and white and red all over?” he asked.

You gotta be kidding me.  Well, one life question answered.

“I don’t know, sweetie.  What’s black and white and red all over?” I asked.

“That Taco Box,” he said.

“What?”

He pointed to the counter where that paradigm of nutrition, the boxed taco meal, sat in state.

A new answer to an old riddle

He said, “It’s black and white, and it’s also red all over, right?”

I laughed.  That boy has his own view of life.  “It sure is, Shane.  That’s a good riddle.”
