Apple Day! (or, “But what about Socialization?”)

September 26, 2009

I cordially invite to join us virtually for “Apple Day.”

Yesterday we met three other families at a park to celebrate the birthday of Johnny Appleseed.  We forgot to sing Happy Birthday to him, but BOY did we have fun with apples!  Join us now as we begin our day.

After everyone is present and accounted for we take a walk to Isaac’s fruit stand to “harvest” our apples and support the local economy.

After everyone has bought their apples, our group heads back to the park.

At the park we settle down and buddy up to taste the varieties of apples we brought back.

Our tummies happy and full of apples, we prepare to start our apple craft:  Printing with apple halves and quarters.  I suppose we could do a fractions lesson here, but no one thinks of it;  and anyway, the kids are anxious to start their apple stamping.

Their prints complete, the kids run off to play and discover a tiny party-crasher.

All the kids take a peek at Mrs. Caterpillar.

Mrs. Caterpillar safely relocated to her new home under a tree root, we gather for our final activity:  The Apple Feast!  Each family has worked together to prepare an apple dish to share.

We made apple turnovers that morning.

Our new friends: Colleen and her girls, Lindsay and Morgan made a giant apple cookie with an impressive array of Pampered Chef gadgets.

Steve and Dawn (not pictured - holding the baby) and Landon and Hayden made apple tarts and apple cupcakes.

Katrina (holding Olivia), Felicia and Micah made applesauce. Shane asked for thirds at dinner.

Here is an apple equation:

4 families with 9 children two and older, 2 babies and 5 adults, 5 great apple recipes, 4 varieties of apples to munch on, 1 shady park with 1 local caterpillar and 1 fun craft idea = ONE GREAT DAY!  (And lots of socialization.)
